One two-month cruise around the Australian Coast was terminated in the wake of the fatal incident of an older lady who was stranded by the ship on a isolated island.

The passenger had been hiking on the tropical location with shipmates from the Coral Adventurer, but separated from the party for a pause. The vessel departed without her and went back several hours later after the crew discovered the woman was unaccounted for.

A major search operation found her remains the next day.

Authorities are investigating the incident, alongside law enforcement and the medical examiner.

Head of the shipping company stated that guests and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were told that the remainder of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and earlier technical problems".

Through an announcement, he added that guests would be issued a total repayment, and said the company was working "to arrange the homeward trips of the individuals via chartered flights".

Regulatory bodies also released an updated announcement, and said they had "provided a directive to the Commander" banning any new passengers from entering the vessel.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the vessel in the port city upon its coming back.

Sequence of Events

The liner originally sailed from the coastal city on October 24th, and was just two days into the journey at the point of the 80-year-old's demise. The remote island was the opening port on the voyage.

Travelers on the vessel - who typically pay tens of thousands of money to participate in the voyage - were taken there for a daily excursion with the choice of trekking or snorkeling.

Family Response

The child of the victim said that her relatives was "stunned and distressed that the ship left the island after an scheduled excursion without my mother".

Through her comments, she portrayed her mum as an "active 80-year-old" who was a member of a bushwalking club.

"From the little information we have been provided, it appears that there was a lapse of care and common sense," she said.

She further stated that she desired the inquiry would be able to identify what "the company should have done that might have preserved Mum's existence".

"According to reports from the police that it was a very hot afternoon, and mother took sick on the hill climb," she revealed.

"She was asked her to return, without accompaniment. Then the vessel left, apparently without performing a passenger count.

"During some point in that sequence, or not long after, she succumbed, without company."

Operator Response

In a statement, the CEO affirmed that the operator was "working closely with authorities to assist their investigation".

He said that the organization was "extremely apologetic that this has happened" and had extended its full support to the loved ones.

Cruise Industry Standards

The vessel caters for up to 120 guests with 46 personnel, according to company data. It was specifically designed to access remote areas of the nation's coast and is outfitted with "auxiliary vessels" - small boats used to transport travelers on land visits.

Occurrences of this nature are infrequent, and passenger vessels have protocols to document which travelers are boarding or getting off, according to industry experts.

"Going ashore secretly or [back] on the ship really isn't an option," a specialist commented.

Vessel operators take these procedures extremely carefully and have "sophisticated systems in place to prevent such events from taking place," the specialist continued.

"This appears to be most likely a surprising - and tragic - one-off."
